About this study abroad program

 Location: Copenhagen and Aarhus, Denmark

Program Dates: Early Fall Start 2023 (August 19-Sept 14)

The program is based in Copenhagen and addresses the interplay of public art and activism, as well as their roles in making visible the history of colonialism and colonized identities in Denmark, past and present.  Students will gain a grounding in Danish history, cultures, and national narratives to explore how public art installations such as I AM QUEEN MARY (currently virtual) have consciously brought together artists, cultural heritage institutions, government, and communities to engage in the complex process of social justice activism through public art.

We will work with partners at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Aarhus, as well as community scholars and artists in the cities of Copenhagen and Aarhus.

Juliana Villegas (she/her) is associate director of the Interdisciplinary Honors Program and affiliate assistant professor in the department of English.  Dr. Villegas has created and directed study abroad programs for the past twenty years, most recently in Denmark (2022) and Japan (2023). Villegas earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of Washington (The Racial Shadow in American Literature).
